Summer 2012
b2ap3_thumbnail_Seasmoke-Whale-watching-2012-07-13-039-960x1280.jpg
Well what a summer, full of big adventures and big news.
b2ap3_thumbnail_Winter-Photos-2009-12-25-005.JPG
We started by changing locations from the beautiful Kootenays to the equally beautiful Cormorant Island off the Northern tip of Vancouver Island. "Location, location, location" say the real estate and vacation ads we are always seeing. So we moved from one amazing location to another.

During the time of preparation for this big move it was announced that Snowboarding was going to be introduced to the 2014 Paralympics at Sochi, Russia.

So the summer began moving into a new job at the "Alert Bay Lodge".  What an amazing place to move to get away from it all. We have mountain biking on the island, although its only cross country it has been some of the most technical difficult riding i have come across. I've spent more time upside down in the bushes than ever before quite often still connected to my bike. I never thought that knee pads would be an essential part of cross country biking, but they have become essential if I don't want BMX guy shins.  LOL

The summer has been amazing biking around our little island. We raced in a recreational mtn bike race call the Dog Run (get your pant on) in which Natasha came 2nd and I didn't finish last. We also competed in our first kayak race called the "Alert Bay 360" and were the 3rd non Olympic style kayak to finish and walked away with an amazing first nations carved mask.

Heavily intermingled with our recreating has been training at the little gym we have here on the island and keeping up with work at the lodge and catering to people from all over the world.

For those of you that have been at one of the introduction to mountain biking clinics and would like to know how to make our burgers...

VegeNut Burgers

1cup mixed nuts

1/2 cup of each chopped celery, chopped onion and chopped carrot

Put it all into the food processor and mix it up, not too much

Add flax seed egg substitute (let it cool a bit before using):

1 tbsp flaxseed

1/2 cup water

Bring to boil, lower heat but keep it boiling and stir until it becomes thick like egg white, take it off heat and leave to cool.  Don't overcook or it goes a little solid.

Once you have added the flax seed, mix it in, the recipe says to not mix it too much but Ian likes to mix it till it is nice and gooey, if you want your burgers to have more texture blend less.

Make into balls and press into burger patties - use a baking tray with parchment paper.  Cook for 15mins on 375 - 400, or until they release from the paper and are easy to slide off and flip over. Cook on other side for about 10mins.

Serve right away or prepare in advance and heat on the bbq for that true burger taste.

Enjoy.

Hike & Yoga oct 1 2011 2011-10-01 025Last year while talking programming with my assistant we came up with a concept that changed the way I think about yoga. A good friend is an amazing yoga instructor and is big on working in the outdoors. I have been looking for a way to combine hiking and biking with other activities and in a moment of inspiration Amber came up with the hike and yoga concept.

Combining the experience of finding new trails, being outdoor in nature and the exhilaration of a hike to a viewpoint overlooking the vista below with the relaxing and rejuvenating experience of yoga was magical. The first session was amazing; despite not really knowing what to expect and apprehensive about the ‘yoga studio’, timing and the après there was no escaping the calm one gets from doing yoga in a mountain top setting with a slight breeze rustling the leaves.

Yoga is a challenge for me. I am a busy person who likes to stay busy, although I love doing yoga and love the results I get from yoga I still avoid it. I find it hard to still the mind, realizing that the busyness is the way to avoid all those thoughts and as soon as I am still they all come rushing in. However, being outside I found it easy to relax, still the mind and listen to the sounds of nature all around. It was the best yoga session I have ever had and I was excited for the next session.

The hike back down was delightful, all downhill, I found my awareness to the beauty around me was heightened and delighted in the sights and sounds of the journey back to reality. The session was followed up with an après, which gave us the chance to ground ourselves, and relive our experience together.

Overall it was an awesome experience. The combination of the rigorous hike to the studio, relaxing yoga flow and meander back down left me ready to take on the world.
