b2ap3_thumbnail_Last-Snowshoe-of-the-Betty-Season-2011-01-03-010-1280x960.jpgSo how much do we benefit by slogging it out on a treadmill at the gym?  and how much do we enjoy it?  It is interesting as regardless of the goal it seems the experts are more and more telling us that endless hours of Cardio is not the answer - regardless of the question.  Unless your aim is to look like an Iron man triathlete - personally I find that they look older than they are and a little sick then Cardio and more cardio is not what you are looking for.

Handstand PushupThis morning this post from James Wilson arrived in my inbox and with Spring on the horizon I thought that I would share some great exercises to help get you ready for the biking season and put a little challenge into your workout.  The great thing about bodyweight exercises is that you don't need to go to the gym to do them!  This quick bodyweight routine is a great addition to your existing workout or to get you started in the morning at home.

Searching for a way to update your pre season work outs? This is a great deal for cardio and strength training you could be using on the mountain or back country! I think mobility training looks great, involving focus on your joints and strengthening high impact areas. Check it out, because there's a sale on it!

How do you feel about Endurance vs. Cardio?  Let me ask you a question – do you want better “cardio” or “endurance” from your training program? Cardio and Endurance are not the same thing, unfortunately building cardio without balance in the rest of your program you will not reap the full benefits of your hard earned Cardio. James Wilson delves into this subject and gives you the solutions you need to work smarter not harder!  Our bodies need balance to function at their best, without this balance you will not get the results you are looking for.

Last night the Kootenay Mountain Bike Coaching Tuesday night level two Ladies ride set out to ride in the dark.  Fully equipped with 8300 odd lumens amoung us courtesy of Lupine Lights and Revolution Cycles in Rossland, we were ready to take on the night.  For most of the ladies this was a first time experience and I must say I was a little apprehensive, but super excited.  Before dropping in we took a moment to celebrate the first snow of the season on Granite Mountain - Fall is here!

This summer has been a whirlwind of activity!  We started with an intense Spring of kids, teens and adult coaching programs.  As the weather heated up we switched to summer bike camps in Rossland and Nelson.  In the in between I have been out exploring as much as time and energy would allow.  From Revelstoke to Nelson, Kaslo to Castlegar, Kettle Falls to Rossland,  I have ridden more trails outside Rossland than any summer before.

I love mountain bike exploring!  When the adventure is not just about the mountain biking climb or the descent but about getting there and coming out alive and in one piece.  The biking is not always epic, however when you are out in the wilderness it is hard to expect that perfect berm or bridge over the giant tree stump!  The adventure and the journey are always a blast, whether you reach your destination or not and the difficult parts are there to make you stronger and more resilient!  Plus negotiating these backcountry trails leaves my ego challenged and confused, which I think is the best way to keep it!  Getting pitched from ones bike is never fun, especially when you are thinking 'I got this'!

Fall Riding Tune - Ups

b2ap3_thumbnail_2013-06-04-15.43.29.jpgI find that this is the time of year that the craziness of summer gives way to schedules and time to get back on the trail for some refocus.  During the heat of the season I find my focus shifts from fine tuning my skills and getting my head back in the game at the start of our riding season to discovering new trails, having fun with friends and riding to enjoy the amazing trails we have around us.  Fall coming gives me a chance to regroup, think about my skills and tidy up all those bad habits I have picked up and fix a few techniques that are broken.

Cornering is something that we all find ourselves working at, most of the time.  It is hard to pick up the correct technique and it is a technique that we all need to work on everytime we hit the trail.

At this point in the season I start to notice those aches and pains that pop up from too much biking and not enough of anything else.  This morning James Wilson pointed out that this may be related to the lack of stretching in my biking!  The good news is I'm not alone and I have the tools to help.

Getting tight and losing some mobility is one of those things that doesn't seem like a big deal at first but it catches up with you eventually. While at first you may just feel a little stiff, if left alone that stiffness can start to rob you of power and endurance while also setting you up for an overuse injury.

For us as mountain bikers keeping the hips, shoulders and ankles mobile becomes even harder because we spend so much time in the same basic position on the bike. Standing up to pedal helps with this some since you're in less of a static position compared to seated pedaling but even then you need to do something to avoid letting stiffness turn into something worse.

In this video I show you a simple 5 minute routine that you can do before and/ or after a ride to keep your joints mobile so they can perform and feel their best.
