I spent my Good Friday afternoon wondering at the technological world that we live in. After spending the morning snowboarding with a group of 9 year old girls we spent the afternoon watching the girls battle it out at Bells for the chance to ring the Bell. As with the guys these girls all wanted it and they were working hard to get a chance. Sally defeated Carissa Moore by the skin of her teeth sending her into the finals with 4 times world champ Stephanie Gilmore, who had strategically won her semi final against Tyler Wright. It was a reversal from last year where Sally defeated Stephanie in the semis going on to win against Carissa Moore in the finals.
Last year Sally's win broke her streak of seconds and pushed her into a tight race for the World Champion title against Carissa Moore. This could be the win that puts her in the mental position to move out of second and take the title this year. After a lead up of great surfing the tide was not favourable for a high scoring heat like the one we saw with the boys but it was a nail biting 40 minutes all the same. Starting with scores in the 3's at 20mins both girls were in the 5's with their two wave scores. A couple of good set waves had the girls giving it their all with Sally coming out on top of the exchange. Uncharacteristically, Stephanie came unstuck on a wave that would have given her the score to take the lead leaving the heat wide open with few opportunities for either of the girls to better their backup scores. It came down to the wire with Sally letting Stephanie go on the last set wave of the heat only looking for a 4.
I love watching Sally surf and I can tell you I was holding my breath as the scores dropped and Sally was victorious. Stephanie had given it her all and both girls showed that they are a couple of the best in the world for a reason - they kill it!
